Austin's late score gives Rangers wild victory at Winston-Salem
Jun 2, 2002
Jacobe Austin ran for two touchdowns and caught a scoring pass, his biggest score being a 6-yard run with 12 seconds left to give the Louisiana Rangers a 69-65 victory over the Winston-Salem Energy in an NIFL contest Saturday night.
It was the second straight cardiac win on the road for the Rangers, who won at Houma, 50-43, on the last play of the game last week. <more>

ThunderCats put on show for fans
Jun 2, 2002
Tennessee finally got the turnout it wanted, and the ThunderCats didn't waste the opportunity.
Tennessee, which has drawn only about 500 fans for its last two home games, defeated previously unbeaten Lake Charles 55-40 before a Civic Coliseum crowd of approximately 2,200 Saturday night. <more>

Tennessee hands LandSharks first loss
Jun 2, 2002
The Lake Charles LandSharks' run at an unbeaten season came to an end Saturday night. And it wasn't because they debuted a new starting quarterback.
The Tennessee ThunderCats beat the LandSharks 55-40 in a National Indoor Football League game with special teams play and some missed chances by the Sharks. <more>

Bucks don’t let Dogs out, end skid
Jun 2, 2002
The Houma Bayou Bucks may want to play the Mississippi FireDogs more than two times a season.
The Bucks (3-7) won their first-ever road game and completed a season sweep of the FireDogs with a 31-22 win at the Mississippi Coast Coliseum Saturday night. The Bucks beat the FireDogs 26-7 on May 5. <more>

Dogs lose to Houma
Jun 2, 2002
After spotting Houma a 12-0 halftime lead, Mississippi pulled to within two points before turnovers left the Fire Dogs at the losing end of a 31-22 loss before an estimated crowd of 750 at the Mississippi Coast Coliseum.
"The turnovers were definitely momentum stoppers," said Stu Rayburn, offensive coordinator for the Fire Dogs. "The defense played well up to that point and really all game. It's frustrating." <more>

Versatile Austin key for Rangers
Jun 1, 2002
Jacobe Austin is listed as a running back on the Louisiana NIFL roster, but that description doesn't begin to cover what he does for the Rangers on game day.
Sure, he sometimes lines up at both deep back and fullback in the Rangers' offense, and is the team's second-leading rusher.
But you will also often find him at receiver, where he is the team's top pass-catching threat, and as the deep man on kicks, since he is one of the top return men in the National Indoor Football League. <more>

Bucks banned but they'll play on
Jun 1, 2002
The rivalry between the Mississippi Fire Dogs and the Houma Bayou Bucks has taken a wacky twist heading into today's game at 7 p.m. at the Mississippi Coast Coliseum.
Fire Dogs offensive coordinator Stu Rayburn said Mississippi will use the revenge factor since the Bucks defeated the Fire Dogs 24-15 on May 5. The Bucks (2-7) will counter with a bit of their own revenge after being banned from the 2002 playoffs.
Houma is banned from postseason play for using former Fire Dogs players Derrick Taite of Moss Point and Stacy Wilson in a 50-43 loss to Alexandria last week without a proper release. <more>

Bucks want no more drama from Dogs
Jun 1, 2002
Today’s game between the Mississippi FireDogs and the Houma Bayou Bucks has its share of subplots.
For starters, both teams are on losing streaks.
The FireDogs (2-6) have lost four in a row. The Bayou Bucks (2-7) have dropped three straight. The last win the Bucks had came on May 5 against the FireDogs in the Houma-Terrebonne Civic Center. <more>

TCats hold out for fan support
Jun 2, 2002
During their Indoor Professional Football League championship run late last season, the Tennessee ThunderCats were drawing between 3,800 and 4,200 fans for home games. During their first season in the National Indoor Football League, the ThunderCats have seen average attendance at Civic Coliseum dwindle to fewer than 1,000 per game. <more>
