What are good jobs to choose when join the air force that will transfer well into a good career in civilian?
I am joining the Air force in the spring/summer of 08 . I need some advice on A.)how to get your recruiter to put in writing a guarantee on the job you want. and B.) What are a list of good jobs that will transfer into a good career once out of the military? I already have my BA degree, in psychology and while I am in the air force I plan on going to school to get my masters , hopefully to aid what I am doing in the air force. My hope in joining the air force is to gain knowledge in a skill that will be able to transfer into civilian life after 3 or so years. I have a family that is depending on my plans so any suggestions on how to go about joining and things to know while in the air force as well as WHAT a good job is would be very helpful! thanks in advance.
Most of the people who have answered your question have suggested that you should be an officer just because you have a degree. However, that is not the case. Just because you have a degree does not mean that you will be an officer. The Air Force is downsizing and are highly selective as to who they are accepting for Officer training. As of right now, they are not taking non-technical degrees. Which means that unless you have a degree in one of the sciences or engineering you are pretty much out of luck. Of course, you go can enlisted for a year and then submit your package for Officer training. That way you will have a better chance of being accepted.
Now, on to your question.
A) Your recruiter cannot guarentee a job for you. Getting the job that you want will depend on how well you do on your ASVAB as well as the openings available. You need to score high enough for whatever job you are interested in. After the ASVAB, you will meet with the job liason. They are the ones that draw up your contract. They will go over what jobs you are qualified for. Now, you may be qualified for a job, but there may not be any open slots. The job will be listed on your contract as well as the length of your enlistment. Don't sign your contract unless you get the job that you want.
B) That is entirely up to you. It all depends on what you are interested in. If you want to continue in the psychology field, you can check out Mental Health Apprentice. The Air Force offers a wide variety of positions that will lateral over to the civilian workplace. Like I said it all depends on what you are interested in doing. So, you''ll need to provide a little more info as to what interest you.
