I have old golf club made of ash wood. It has A.H, Finlay stamped in the head but no manufacturer or any other?
there is no other marketing on the club. I was told by an antique shop that the club was assemble probably by a blacksmith because of certain things he identified, but definite not manufactured. He also said the head is not recent steel but he was unable to say how old. He guess at mid to early 1800's. the grip is missing but a tack is still present and he said it was very old. old I need to know where to find a good apprasial.

A. H. Finlay may be both the designer and maker of the club. During golf's infancy, there were no manufacturers per se. The golf professionals at the various country clubs made and designed clubs for their patrons. In fact, one of the requirements for being a club professional was the ability to design , fit and make clubs . That was also the reason so many of the earlier American club makers were from Scotland.
