why do shooting guards have shorter careers than other players?
i still see many centers at the age of 32, but not a lot of shooting guards at the same age. why is this so? do shooting guards depend more on their knees or ankles? basically, i'm asking what keeps guards healthy.
It has all to do with size. Size doesn't wither with age. Big men have just as many problems, actually moreso, with ankles, knees and such. The heavier weight and greater distance between joints means just as many problems as guards have.
It just doesn't matter to them. Centers don't need the explosive quickness that is impacted by the wear and tear. All they have to do is lumber down the court, bang, and grab rebounds. You don't need great knees for that. See Mutomobo, Mourning, Ewing, etc.
By contrast, guards must have the quickness and explosivenss to get open and defend. As you age, the quickness goes. You just notice the injuries more since they drastically impact effectiveness -- nagging injuries to guards can end careers quickly (Jason Williams, Penny Hardaway, etc.).
Combine natural aging with injuries, and it doesn't take much to but a guard past their prime.
The other factor is physics. The NBA gets more and more physical each year. Small guys banging into big guys = more injuries for small guys.
IF you are in a car wreck, you want to be the Range Rover not the Mini.
