Why does my puppy stand over my 4 year old son when he sits on the floor.?
Every time my son sits on the floor my 7 month old Newfoundland X Poodle stands over him. I'm thinking she is either displaying dominance (I hope not) or it's a protective instinct but I'm not sure, I've never seen another dog do anything like that. She doesn't bark,growl or nip at him, just stands there with him sitting under her mid section. Does anyone have any ideas? Is this something I should discourage or is she just being protective?
It could be dominance or it could be protective. Might even be an attention-seeking behavior! Either way, this isn't behavior you really want to let become ingrained though. I'd discourage this as it's not helpful and will definitely frighten people in a 100 pound dog!
What happens if you approach the dog and child when this is going on? Does he listen to you or does he ignore you? What happens if your child tells the dog to move?
If the dog is receptive to commands, it's more likely protective or attention-seeking behavior.
I'd work on getting the dog to sit when your son is on the floor, or better yet, lay down.
