How can I tell if the barrel is free floated on my gun?
I own a new Remington Model 700 XCR Synthetic Stainless in .270 with the new X-mark Pro Trigger, and does anyone know if the barrel is free floating on this particular gun, how do I tell?
And is it a good thing to have the barrel free floating? And last of all, how do I float the barrel if I have to? and any other tips for squeezing accuracy out of my gun?
A simple test is to take a dollar bill and see if it slips between the barrel and stock for-end. Some rifles shoot better with a free-floated barrel while others do better with some upward pressure on the barrel at the for-end. If it is not free floated (it probably is) you can glass bed the action with a small spacer between the barrel and for-end while the glass bedding is curing. The trigger adjustment (light without creep) and lock time (fast) are key components in being able to get the most from a rifle. Reloading to get ammunition to maximize accuracy is essential. Group size may vary considerably with velocity and bullet (weight and brand). The depth of seating of the bullets in the cartridge case is also important. In general you will get improved accuracy if the bullets are seated so they are almost (but not quite) touching the lands of the barrel.
